We spent four class sessions volunteering with the moderate to severely handicap students at Redlands High School. During our adventure we helped our new friends to paint beautiful Christmas frame masterpieces, write their names, play outdoor games and sports, and dance.
Of all me new friends, Bobby stands out the most. Though I did not help him paint his holiday frame, I was able to play basketball and bowling with him, and he helped me with some pretty cool dance moves. His enthusiastic personality, friendly disposition, and display of affection drew my attention to him.
Honestly, I found my discomfort around these students to be most suprising. I have worked with disabled students before, but not with such severe handicaps. I was overwhelmed by their abrupt nature, and lack of socially acceptible mannerisms. I overcame this immediate set back, and learned to take from their forward personalities. My new friends taught me to be more comfortable expressing whatever I am feeling, no matter how acceptible, and helped show me how rediculous certain standards are.
